Project Details
The architectural and structural design for the Palisades State Park Welcome Center and Comfort Station focused on functionality, durability, and compatibility with the surrounding landscape. Banner Associates worked closely with SD Game, Fish & Parks to review previously constructed welcome centers and comfort stations and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, usability, and ADA compliance. Materials, building layout, and structural systems were selected to support long‑term performance in a high‑use recreational environment while visually complementing the quartzite features that define Palisades State Park.
The Welcome Center is a 1,344 square foot wood‑framed structure that includes office space, meeting space, a front desk area to greet visitors, and a drive‑up window to serve park users. The layout was developed to support daily park operations and provide an efficient, welcoming experience for guests entering the expanded park.
The Comfort Station is a 1,418 square foot masonry structure housing men’s, women’s, and family restrooms with full shower facilities. Banner reviewed existing Game, Fish & Parks comfort station designs and implemented improvements, with particular emphasis on ADA accessibility, durability, and ease of maintenance. Structural systems and materials were selected to withstand high seasonal use while integrating seamlessly with the surrounding park infrastructure.
Banner Associates coordinated architectural and structural design with civil, geotechnical, and utility elements of the broader park expansion to ensure the buildings function effectively within the overall site and support future park growth.
