Expanding Palisades State Park: Responding to Growing Demand - Due to its proximity to Sioux Falls and being located in the highest per capita county in South Dakota, Palisades State Park has seen a steady increase in visitor numbers year after year. This growth highlighted the significant demand for additional camping spaces within the park.

Recognizing this need, South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks seized the opportunity to undertake a comprehensive revitalization of Palisades State Park. As part of this project, the park’s entrance was relocated from the north end to the south end, which called for the construction of a new visitor center. Additionally, the expansion of camping sites created the necessity for a new comfort station to accommodate the increased usage.

Project Details

Banner staff played a key role in developing the layout and design for the new visitor center, which includes office space for park employees and a convenient drive-up window for visitors. The building was constructed using lumber framing, with a slab-on-grade and concrete foundation ensuring stability and durability.

The design of the new comfort station was carefully planned to include multiple ADA-accessible restrooms with showers, providing increased space and convenience for campers. To ensure long-term durability, the comfort station was constructed with masonry walls and a lumber rafter system for the roof.
